Fundamentals of Design I, “Fundies I”
2006-12
This first-year studio introduced spatial reasoning through three progressive projects, combining manual drawing (axonometric, orthographic, and perspective) with model-making to develop foundational architectural skills in form, materiality, and composition:
Project A explored the articulation of cubic volume using planar and linear elements. Students analyzed part-to-whole relationships through physical models and transparent, exploded axonometrics.
Project B focused on tectonics by transforming folded paper into volumetric wood constructions. Emphasis was placed on joinery, material translation, and drawing movement over time using graphic conventions.
Project C investigated spatial perception through color gradients and proportion. Students carved foam molds based on golden section grids, cast them in concrete, and inserted a wood construction to activate the resulting form as architectural site.

project A - transparent axonometric , model, model joinery details, and explodes axonometrics

project B - wooden models translated from paper models, exploded axonometrics, model details, and unfolding volume drawings
project C - 1. color field analysis, transcribed in block model & foam formwork to poured concrete form 2. frame field transcribed in wood, then analyzed in axonometric drawing
palette of projects A, B, C
